Pep's Musical Bar

Pep's Musical Bar opened in 1951. It was one of the clubs to see the who's who of jazz performances. Nina Simone, Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, Max Roach, Art Framer, Albert Heath, and Benny Golson to name a few. The jazz community in Philadelphia was strong, supportive of young aspiring musicians. Taverns would let underage musicians have jam sessions in the early evenings. The Philadelphia jazz community inspired and mentored younger artists. During this time some of the greatest players were crossing paths, young and more seasoned musicians. Inspiring each other with new ideas and through experimentation.
